Mastering the SUP Paddle Stroke
I believe that a clean, efficient paddle stroke transforms your time on the water. In this video, our World Champ and pro instructor Seychelle breaks down the basic paddle stroke into easy, step-by-step mechanics, perfect for beginners and intermediate paddlers alike.
1. Hand Position / Paddle Grip
- Top hand holds the T‑grip firmly, palm down, think of guiding the stroke.
- Bottom hand grips the shaft about shoulder-width down.
- Keep arms relaxed with elbows slightly bent to stay fluid.
2. Catch Phase
- Dip the blade vertically into the water near board nose.
- Ensure full submersion before you begin pulling, this engages the core, not just the arms.
3. Power Phase
- Drive the paddle straight back parallel to the board.
- Rotate your torso, this is key: your rotation does the work, not just arm strength.
- Shoulders and hips work together for smooth energy transfer.
4. Exit & Recovery
- Pull paddle out near your feet, maintaining control and minimizing splash.
- Swing blade forward through the air for the next stroke, keep it relaxed and graceful.
5. Body Mechanics & Flow
- Maintain a slight athletic bend in your knees for balance.
- Gaze forward, not down, this helps with stability and direction.
- Embrace the rhythm: Catch → Power → Exit → Recovery,repeat smoothly.
Why This Matters on Biscayne Bay
Biscayne Bay’s calm yet dynamic waters are ideal for perfecting this technique. Nailing the stroke means you’ll paddle:
- Faster, with less drag
- Straighter, using balanced strokes
- Longer, conserving energy through body rotation

Pro Tip from Coach Aymee
“Rotation, not arms, that’s where the power comes from.”
Focus on letting your torso do the heavy lifting, and your arms will follow naturally.
