The height of a SUP paddle plays a crucial role in both performance and comfort on the water. A paddle that is too short forces you to hunch and rely more on your arms, wasting energy and reducing stroke efficiency, while one that is too long causes overreaching, slows your cadence, and puts unnecessary strain on your shoulders and back. The right height allows you to engage your whole body, maintain proper technique, and keep a smooth stroke rhythm, which not only improves speed and control but also helps prevent fatigue and injury. By matching the paddle height to your body size, paddling style, and type of activity, you create a more comfortable, efficient, and enjoyable paddling experience.
Getting your paddle size right is key to better performance and comfort on the water. Here’s how to do it:
Find the Right Paddle Length
Stand your paddle upright in front of you. Add 1 shaka (hang loose hand sign) to your height—this gives you the perfect paddle length for most all-around paddling.
Another method that seems to be more effective is to extend your dominant and up, bend your wrist and bring the paddle up to your hand.90°- 90° Drill for your Bottom Hand
This is to find the sweet spot for middle of the paddle, where you bottom hand should go. Place the paddle on top of your head. Adjust your hands so your elbows form a 90° angle. This is the ideal grip width for power and control.
Front of the SUP Paddle
Make sure the side of the blade that curves away from you is pointing toward the nose of the board, that is the front of the paddle. The back, or power face, which is the scooped side, should face you. This is the correct paddle position for an efficient catch and smooth glide.
