Looking for a fun way to enjoy the outdoors? Stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) is a great way to explore the water, stay active, and connect with nature. It is a low-impact sport that is easy to learn when you start with proper instruction.
At SUP-Miami Paddleboard School, we teach beginners and experienced paddlers how to paddle safely and confidently. Every SUP lesson includes a paddle board, paddle, leash, U.S. Coast Guard-approved personal flotation device (PFD), and all the equipment you need. Just bring your smile and be ready to have fun on the water.
Like any water sport, the key to having a great experience is putting safety first. Before heading out, follow these simple safety tips.
1. Check the Conditions
Always check the weather and water conditions before you paddle.
Conditions vary depending on where you paddle, whether it is the ocean, Biscayne Bay, the Intracoastal Waterway, a lake, or a river.
Pay close attention to:
- Wind speed
- Wave height (swell)
- Water currents
- Boat traffic
- Water quality
For beginners, winds of 10 mph or less provide the best learning conditions. If winds exceed 15 mph, stay off the water.
If you plan to paddle along the coast, check the surf forecast before launching. Larger waves create more challenging conditions.
Always check trusted resources such as NOAA for weather forecasts and local water quality reports before your session.
2. Dress for the Water
Dress for the possibility of getting wet because you probably will.
Wear comfortable clothing designed for swimming, such as:
- Swimsuit
- Board shorts
- Rash guard or sun shirt
Avoid cotton or heavy clothing that becomes uncomfortable when wet.
3. Protect Yourself from the Sun
The Florida sun can be intense, especially on the water. UV rays reflect off the surface and increase your exposure.
Protect yourself by bringing:
- Broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher)
- Lip balm with SPF
- Hat or cap
- Long-sleeve sun shirt
- Polarized sunglasses with a retainer strap
Good sun protection helps prevent sunburn and reduces long-term skin damage.
4. Bring the Essentials
Every lesson at SUP-Miami Paddleboard School includes:
- Stable paddle board
- Adjustable paddle
- U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket (PFD)
- Safety leash
- Professional instruction
We also recommend bringing:
- Drinking water
- A fully charged phone in a waterproof case
- Water shoes or sandals
- Sunglasses with a retainer
- A small towel for after your lesson
- We paddle barefoot but water shoes for when needed
Bring only the essentials so you can paddle comfortably.
5. Tell Someone Your Plan
Before heading out, let someone know:
- Where you are paddling
- What time you expect to return
Better yet, paddle with a friend or join one of our group lessons. Paddleboarding is always more enjoyable when shared with others.
6. Always Wear Your Leash
Your leash is one of the most important pieces of safety equipment.
Always wear it securely around your ankle while on the water. If you fall, the leash keeps your board within reach. Your board is your largest flotation device, so never paddle without a leash.
7. Know the Navigation Rules
A stand-up paddle board is a non-motorized vessel, just like a kayak or canoe. As the operator, you are responsible for following local navigation rules.
To stay safe:
- Learn basic boating right-of-way rules.
- Avoid marked navigation channels whenever possible.
- Stay visible to other boaters.
- Watch for boats, jet skis, and changing conditions.
- Paddle defensively and remain aware of your surroundings.
